I originally wrote this for the retiree newsletter but want to share it with others.
When George retired, we, his staff in Career Services, decided to compile a memory book and I posted a web page where faculty and staff could post something about George. At the time, I was very touched-and remain so-by the consistent comments his colleagues submitted. They were not in the vein of his performance in the job as might be expected. Instead they often wrote of a kindness, a favor, a personal and meaningful interaction with George. He came closer to achieving Maya Angelou's goal than anyone I ever knew.
“I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” {--Maya Angelou}
He enriched all of us with small courtesies and reaching out to be kind. And now is the time when each of us can remember how he made us feel.

"Call me George"... I can still hear Dr. Toth saying this to me over the years. It got to be a little exchange we'd have followed by big smiles. "The Delts are up to something"...heard this one many times but it meant both good stuff and (kinda) bad stuff! I spent countless hours in Dr. Toth's office while I was chapter president and beyond. His mentoring had a profound impact on me. I still giggle about his reaction to the "pledge name" I bestowed on him. I had lost touch with George over the years but reconnected on Facebook a couple of years ago...it was great to see that he was enjoying his retirement. My condolences to Ginger and the entire family. RIP Dr. Toth

Dr. Toth was a kind gentleman and a caring professional who made a long-lasting impact at The College at Brockport. In the fall of 2000 he drove the van that brought me to the Penn State University Park campus for the first time. We were in a van full of McNair and CSTEP Program students attending a career fair, but I was on my way to my admission interviews with Penn State's Instructional Systems PhD program. Most of the 4.5-hour ride south from Brockport to State College was spent discussing how much he loved Penn State and its community. After my interviews most of the 4.5-hour ride home was spent strategizing about assistantship funding and living arrangements at the university. Not only did I graduate from Penn State with two graduate degrees, I've also worked at other institutions and then returned to be a faculty member at Penn State.
Dr. Toth had a genuine love for Penn State, for The College at Brockport, and for the many students he supported. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

This note is to express my condolences to Ginger, Karin, Lisa, Greg and families on the passing of my cousin George. I recall as a boy George visiting my parents on Westside Road in Torrington and he seemed to have a special connection with my mother(Evelyn). I assist families of patients from Yale with the grieving process on a daily basis as a Social Worker in New Haven, and I encourage all to cherish the memories which will always be there ! I was so very saddened at the news of George's passing. George was my supervisor for nearly 20 years at The College at Brockport in the Career Services Office. He was a caring man with a great sense of humor. He was very proud of his wife, children and grandchildren and would share stories and photos with us. He also enjoyed hearing about and meeting the families of his staff. Since we were both retired, we seldom saw each other any more. But when there were get-togethers, he would try to be there to catch up with everyone. It was my experience that he had great faith in God and I'm certain we will see him again one day. In heaven there is youth, excellent health and no sorrow. Blessings and God's care to Ginger, Karin, Lisa, Greg and their families as you go through this difficult time. George will be missed by so many.

George was my boss at Brockport for 13 years. We had some fabulous times with the staff. He was such a caring man and was there for me when I was. Sting for an elderly Mom and rebellious teenager. I couldn't have gotten they it without him. He loved my baking and the goodies I made for staff meetings. He talked about his kids all the time. I met Greg a few times at the office. George retired a few years before I did so never got to hear him brag about his grandchildren. But he sure couldn't wait to have them. I am just one person that George made an impact on. I will say a prayer for him and you all. He will be missed!!! Love you, George.

George was my academic advisor at Brockport 30 years ago and he left an indelible impression on me. Through his generous giving of his time to me personally with my curriculum and career advisement, I remember getting to know him personally. He also stayed committed to supporting and advising our fraternity Delta Sigma Phi. He had family pictures all over his office and he would light up when I would ask about the photos. Although I have not had personal contact with George for many years, it was a pleasure to watch via his Facebook posts how proud a father, husband, and grandfather he was and that his pride spilled into the next generation. He reached out to me a couple of times to catch up in recent years as did I via Facebook. It's Amazing to think that his goodness and generous heart made me feel still connected to him. That says a lot about his character and spirit which I am sure will live on in his legacy. I know George would laugh if we deified him, so I don't want to do that. But like an artist that can't truly appreciate his own art, it is for others to cherish. So I just felt that when a good man like George graduates from this Earth to be with God, those that Remain can't help but miss him.

I am very sorry for the loss of George. I am George's cousin, Tom, who was born and raised in Torrington, Connecticut and moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida in 1988. I have fond memories of George. As I have become a husband, father, and grandfather myself, I always respected and admired what a wonderful role-model George was as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Although I did not have the opportunity to communicate with George over many, many years, his memory as a loving family man has always resonated with me.
I am deeply sorry for your loss and my prayers have been and will continue for your comfort during this deeply sorrowful time.
