Eugene Daniel Dollard Obituary

Eugene Daniel Dollard, of Hamlin, NY, born May 14, 1925, passed away after a long illness on March 16, 2024. 

Eugene appeared an average man, yet there prevails an untold story of commitment and selfless service that remain the core components of his identity sharpened as a World War II Veteran. Fighting valiantly to secure our freedoms, he faced a tyrant on stormy Omaha Beaches on D-Day and later the bloody beaches of Okinawa.

By presidential decree, French President Emmanuel Macron bestowed on Eugene the Legion of Honor Medal, the highest honor conferred for military bravery and service and as a United States Naval Veteran he shared the prominence with other American recipients, including, Generals Dwight David Eisenhower, Douglas Mac Arthur, George S. Patton, and Admiral Michael Mullen.

Eugene also received recognition for valor in combat operations; awarded with the New York State Conspicuous Star and Medal of Merit.

His legacy of hardship, struggle and survival demonstrated the highest standards of character and dedication. Inspiring generations to follow, Eugene Dollard was an average man turned extraordinary, thrust into remarkable events, selflessly serving our country to protect the freedoms that we as a nation enjoy today.

Honorably discharged he returned to the United States, finished his education at the University of Notre Dame, including law school, married his first wife, Jeanette and had two children. Over seventy years, he developed several wholesale/retail meat, liquor, and real estate enterprises in Hamlin, NY, including the famed, “Dollard’s Market”.  Gene was always known for delighting his customers with his enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Jeanette Harmon Dollard and infant daughter, Jeanette Lee, his sister, Marie McGrath, and brothers, Vincent and Francis Dollard. He is survived by his second wife, Marciana Dollard MD. He is also survived by his two daughters from his first marriage, their spouses, eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. They include his daughters, Elizabeth Mary Dollard Bysiek, Kathleen Louise Dollard Haitz, and their spouses, Edward Bysiek, Timothy Haitz, grandchildren, Edward Bysiek III, (Evelyn Bysiek, spouse) Michael Bysiek, Stephanie Bysiek, Christine (Bysiek) Goodling, (Jason Goodling, spouse) Matthew Bysiek, Daniel Haitz,  (Juliet Haitz, spouse) Eric Haitz, (Anna Haitz, spouse), Kelly Haitz Moore, (Andrew Moore, spouse) and great grandchildren, Jay Damodar, Nicolas Damodar, Julia Damodar, Edward Bysiek IV, Sylvia Bysiek, Juliana Bysiek, Jenna Goodling, Mya Rose Goodling, Hinsley Haitz, Houston Haitz, Molly Moore, and Rory Moore.

He is also survived by his good friend and trusted employee, James Peters.

There will be viewing at Fowler Funeral Home at 340 West Ave., Brockport on Thursday, March 21 from 3 – 6 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Hamlin, NY on Friday, March 22 at 10 am with a Graveside Service to follow at Holy Sepulchre in Rochester.
