My remarks at Jennyfest! July 30, 2023
I don’t think that we’ll ever take the full measure of our loss, how much richer our lives might have been had Jenny continued with us, and now never will be. Certainly not yet. But I think we might do well to recall why this is a loss, how much richer our lives have been because she was with us.
She led a complex, boisterous life, living up to her namesakes: Brecht and Weill’s “Pirate Jenny” and Richard Fariña’s take on Bob Dylan, “Morgan the Pirate”. It was a life that enriched anyone fortunate enough to have been touched by it. Within our family she was often the one who kept us on track when we needed it. In 2005 Alice remarked that when she and Eric got married it was really Jenny’s wedding, she just happened to be the bride. A year later Jenny cracked the whip to make sure we were where we supposed to be when we supposed to be there when Molly and Matt were married in Las Vegas. And managing all this while she was living nine hundred fifty miles away in Atlanta. Later she rounded us up and made sure we were there when Allistair and Laila and Jack were born.
We were housemates for the last twelve years, and I was able to see her focus her attention and affection on her daughter Gloria, and observe how, as a single mom, she helped Gloria navigate the normal sequence of developmental thresholds we’ve all had to manage in our lives, and do it most recently in these extraordinary circumstances.
She had her struggles. Those of us who had the occasionally irksome privilege of knowing and loving her were aware of that. But that isn’t what endures in our imagination. Look at the pictures here. In almost all of them you can see a joy radiating out from her features, as if nothing else was possible. You get the sense that something wonderful has just happened or that something wonderful is about to happen, and that she can’t wait to share it with everyone. That is what will endure among us. That’s what will continue to energize some part of the best we have in us.
I’m put in mind of Dick Blum, a childhood friend we lost many years ago. He had a role in our circle of friends much like Jenny had in hers. He was the person who got us excited about things, who charged up centers in our psyches that might otherwise have remained dormant. Nudged us in directions that we might not otherwise have considered going. We can feel those impulses to this day. While we still mourn his loss, we honor what remains of his presence. The impulses that still inform some part of our understanding of the world and our place in it, and light the path forward. Fifty years on we’re still swapping Blum stories. Twenty, thirty, forty years from now you’ll still be telling tales to people who never met Jenny about “this amazing person I once knew…” and among yourselves stories that start “Remember that time when……?” You’ll find that telling those stories refreshes your spirit. That they’re here to tell is the blessing Jenny leaves us.
I’m certainly a much better person for having had her in my life. I think we all are. That’s what we’re here to celebrate.

I'm sorry for your loss! Jenny understood my crazy and I always loved her for that. She was my best friend, and although we had distance at times I never stopped trusting that she was. I miss her already and I hope the best for Gloria she was Jenny's heart and light. I added this picture of our pig ear sandwich incident thinking back at one of the many fun times I shared with her. She gave me hope on many hopeless days. I love you Jenny!!! Always.
