Obituary of Kathryn R. Dabney
Kathryn Robin Dabney, of Brockport, New York was born on June 4,1944 in Brooklyn, NY and passed away on July 16, 2022. She spent her last days at her daughter’s home surrounded by loving family. Kathryn is survived by her children; Dawn Zenkert, Sarah (Geoffrey) Mills, Robyn (Shelli) Zenkert, Scott (Katie) Zenkert, and her grandsons; Evan and Aiden Mills.
Kathryn was a graduate of Monroe Community College and SUNY Brockport, where she received her associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in Recreation and Leisure and Therapeutic Recreation respectively. Kathryn went on to obtain her master’s degree from SUNY Brockport in Counselor Education. Kathryn received several student awards for her service outreach work in the community. She was well- regarded by her professors, peers, friends, and those she served in the community. Kathryn’s education served her well in her career in service to others including her work as Director of Therapeutic Recreation at Medina Memorial Hospital in Medina, NY and The Shore Winds Nursing Home in Rochester, NY.
Kathryn cared deeply about improving the quality of life for her patients and friends though her work providing compassionate support for those in need physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Her work spanned countless activities such as play workshops, specialty events and outings with residents, pet therapy, and one on one comfort care/healing. Her dedication to the individual encompassed overall health, well-being, and a renewed spirit toward recovery and beyond.
In her later years, Kathryn delighted in the company of her beloved family at home as well their treasured outings to the beach, strolling along the canal, visits to the zoo, the farm, area parks, waterfalls, kayaking, taking a horse-drawn carriage ride, watching her grandsons play hockey and soccer, or just hanging out in the comfort of the backyard, amidst the light breeze, bustling trees, and warm sunshine. Her calm peaceful demeanor welcomed frequent backyard visitors including grazing deer, melodic birds, and delicate butterflies, always sure to renew her spirit.
A memorial service honoring Kathryn’s life will be held outside in the backyard at her home in Brockport, NY on Tuesday August 9th at 4pm with a celebration to follow the service to share stories, cherished memories, pictures, enjoy food, etc. Join us in renewing our spirits with family and friends as we hold mom close in our hearts. With respect to Mom’s dedication to the local community during her formative years, the family plans to place a commemorative bench in her honor. We hope to place the bench along the canal in Brockport, as that was a favorite family outing during mom’s later years while spending time with family. If anyone wishes to make donations towards the commemorative bench, please let the family know. Or, the family invites Mom’s friends to take this time to make a donation to your favorite community charity in her honor.
