Q: How did you meet John?
A: Dr. Killigrew was one of my Profs in the 70's. He hooked me up with some Chinese students. That led me to spend a year in Taiwan in 77-78. It utterly changed my life. I tell my 3 sons about him regularly.

I was one of those young students who serendipitously & fortunately caught his “contagion”;)). Looking back, he was indeed my favorite professor at Brockport, igniting my academic interest in China. I was continually fascinated by his stories and insights, and always looked forward to attending his classes. My thoughts and condolences to his extended family and friends.
Sincerely, - Joe Coccia, CAPT, U.S.C.G, ret., SUCB ‘76, KSG Harvard ‘85

My deepest condollences to Dr. Killigrew's family. I have just learned of his passing and it has deeply saddened me. I was his student in the late 90's and early 2000's. It was because of him that I travelled to China to study Chinese. Indeed both Dr. Killigrew and Mrs. Killigrew visited my while I was there in Shanghai in 1999. I still have letters and emails he wrote to me during the 2000s. My mind has thought of him regularly over the years since. He had a huge impact on me and will always appreciate his help and support on my studies and throughout my career.

My sincere condolences to Dr Killigrew’s family. I was in several of his classes while completing my graduate studies at Brockport in the 1970s. After I had taken every course from him on China, Dr Killigrew set up an independent study for me under his guidance so I was fortunate to be able to work pretty closely with him. His enthusiasm for teaching, learning and Chinese history and culture was contagious. I will never forget the times during class when he would mention a word or concept and then race to the chalkboard to diagram the Chinese pictographs and explain the origins and modern day iterations of the Chinese language. Though I have not seen Dr Killigrew since the 1970s, I have never forgotten him and his impact on my life. He was truly one of a kind and anyone who knew him will be deeply affected by his passing.

My heartfelt condolences to John’s family. Dr. Killigrew was my teacher, mentor and friend. He instilled in me a passion for studying the history of China. I remember fondly many hours spent chatting in his office. Those chats led me to pursue a graduate degree in East Asian Studies and to become a history teacher. His influence was profound.

To Professor Killigrew's family: I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I took Southeast Asian History from Dr. Killigrew in the early 70's. He made it truly come alive and will always be my most memorable teacher. May he rest in peace and may God console you.
