I’ve worried about seeing this news since I lost track of Charlie after seeing him and Pat at a Bronx high school reunion c. 2010.
We knew Charlie was already ill then, but it was still good to see him and the love with which Pat cared for him. Charlie as we knew him was not just a brilliant kid, but also a great guy. Despite being academically highly competitive, he spared we lesser lights beatings at the hands of our Christian Brothers (different times) by permitting us to, um, “borrow” quiz answers or homework..
Not as gifted athletically, Charlie was a fierce competitor in intramural sports, especially sneaker hockey.
While Charlie was never “one of the guys” or conventionally popular, just quiet and self assuming, he was universally liked and respected, a rare feat with the mix of classmates he had.
My condolences to his family and may his memory be a blessing

Dr. Sommer was my statistics professor at Temple University in 1980. He was an amazing instructor. I got an A in his class--a subject many found difficult to understand. He made it all so clear. I consider him a mentor because he opened my eyes to a world beyond the Irish and Italian Catholic neighborhood I grew up in in Philadelphia. I used to visit him in his office just to chat and share stories, during the balance of my college years. I was sad to know that he left Temple. He was a true asset to the school. I had hoped to one day cross paths with him again. I regret that never happened. But I'm glad to read that he had married and had children. He must have been an amazing husband and father. One funny memory I recall was that at the completion of class he'd be covered with chalk (old days!!) from being all over the chalkboard with his statistical scenarios! He was a lot of fun and always cheerful--which was much needed in a early morning class!! I'm glad I knew him!

I am currently an adjunct in the MATH Dept. at SUNY Brockport. I had Dr. Sommer as a student there (twice) "back in the day"! He made STATS fun, meaningful and interesting! He also met on SATURDAY mornings with those students interested .. to take practice actuarial exams!
I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was more helpful to me than he ever knew.

Pat, I’m deeply saddened that Charlie is no longer with us, but so glad to have been his friend. I’ll always remember seeing both of you at the train shows and York meet. He knew a lot about the toy trains we collected and I was honored to be included in the booklet he wrote about them. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
