Obituary of Jean N. Moore

Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jean Elizabeth Nelson Moore passed away May 25th 2020. Jean was born May 15, 1928 to Harold and Ada (Clark) Nelson. They lived on a farm in Sweden, on Root Road in the early years of Jean’s life, then moved to the South Lake Road farmhouse.

She attended elementary school at the Sweden School House on the South Lake Road until high school then went to The Brockport Central Rural High School, where she graduated as Valedictorian. She then attended RBI.

She met her husband Wayne Moore through a close friend Carol Laack (Unger) while he was a lifeguard at Hamlin Beach. They Married in 1949. Jean and Wayne lived in Michigan while Wayne attended college. They then moved back to Brockport to start a family while living on College Street. They later moved to the family homestead on South Ave.

Jean worked at Dr. Fuller’s office, the 5th grade office at The Brockport Central School and several law offices all while raising 4 boys, Ken, Hal, Randy and Dave, and having a very active social life. In 1991 Jean & Wayne lost their son Randy in a sudden accident.

Something Jean would always say, was something a parent should never have to live through. This effected them deeply.

The Moore’s enjoyed the friendships of many special families in Brockport, and they had many parties picnics and fun times. Playing some of the strangest games.

One of Jean’s most favorite places was the cottage on Lake Ontario. She always felt so lucky to have such a special place to enjoy. Jean and Wayne always offered this fun to family and friends, as many fun parties and always the 4th of July were celebrated there.

She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brockport where she and Wayne would attend regularly. They both helped out with many functions and activities at the church. They made many lifelong friends there. Jean had many passions and interests. She was an avid reader, gardener, knitter, quilter and loved to sew. Later in life she became active with different clubs: Book club, Lunch bunch, silver sneakers, class reunion committee, and Monday morning breakfast at the Golden Eagle. Jean loved to dine out with her special friends, where the conversation was always happy and long. She loved any meal she didn’t have to cook herself. She looked forward to these activities and found it very difficult when the Covid 19 virus made it impossible to get out and enjoy times with her friends. She even tried to talk Dave and Norm into letting her just drive the van to Dollar General because she thought the tires needed to be exercised.

Jean loved spending time with all her family and did so whenever she could. Her nieces and nephews would call or visit and they would spend many hours sitting on the front porch or at a restaurant reminiscing and catching up on all the family events.

Jean and Wayne both enjoyed sitting on the front porch and visiting with anyone who would walk by on South Avenue. A lot of time was spent talking with the mail carriers, anybody who walked a dog down the street, Lenny after he had mowed the lawn, and many special neighbors, including Norm and Mary Ann Knapp whom would always look after Jean. They were joined many times with their granddaughter Julia. It was always an enjoyable time for everyone.

She loved spending time with her boys, Ken on Sunday afternoons for a chat. Visiting Hal and his family in Plattsburgh when she could and she always had a list of things to do when Dave would stop up to the house regularly to check on her and visit. Jean spent her last few weeks of life staying with Dave and Scarlet, after she had been in the hospital where the Doctors found blood clots in her lungs. She was trying very hard to get back to normal so she could go back to her home on South Ave. Jean would sit in her chair and watch the birds and squirrels, doing her crossword puzzles and talking to so many of her friends. She had just celebrated her 92nd birthday with a small party with Dave & Scarlet, her grandkids and great grandchildren.
